The group's presentation may be staged indoors or outdoors, featuring 3-5 minute speeches by each character. Both exhibits include authentic and reproduction Civil War items that audiences can see and touch. Outside appearances include a large bivouac area with tents and materials found at such a campsite. Members use their musical talents, both vocally and instrumentally, to enhance their presentations.
Roger Leach, who founded the group, taught for thirty-five years in the Quincy public school system. The idea started with one of his students that had studied the Civil War and wanted a way to share that knowledge with others. The classes in their own school became their first audience. After that, the group added new members and broadened their base of operations. They have presented at schools throughout the Midwest region, at educational conferences, for clubs and organizations, and attend many re-enactments in the area.
Presently, the twenty plus members of the group, including auxiliary members from Bulgaria, South Korea, Germany, Milan, Italy, Catania, Italy, Russia and Slovakia are honor students and leaders in their various schools, churches, and communities. The group is a non-profit organization and its members receive no credit or personal remuneration for their hard work. All donations to the group are used to purchase items for future displays and programs. According to Leach, "These students have a love of knowledge and they truly enjoy sharing that knowledge with others. They have no wish to glorify war, but they believe in this great country of ours and hope we all learn from our past in order to help create a better future. With awesome, caring young people such as this, we can truly celebrate all that is great in the youth of our country."
Proceeds from a Civil War Military Ball, which is held the second Saturday in February in Quincy, IL, provides funds for the troup's presentation expenses and for summer study tours to Civil War battlefield sites. The research from such trips will be used to enhance the members personal understanding of the period and enrich their individual presentations. Future trips are planned to be held every other year. The group is always looking for materials to help their presentation and appreciate donations of any type. They are currently seeking a pick-up truck to transport all of their materials to the presentations.
